TRUST LAUNCH FOOTBALL & EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Are you looking to continue your studies when you leave school while training and playing football, representing Chesterfield FC? If so, there is an opportunity to study with Chesterfield FC Community Trust in 2018!

Chesterfield FC Community Trust’s Football and Education programme is designed for individuals wanting to gain post-16 sports qualifications and play competitive football, alongside studying.

The course has been designed as a partnership between Chesterfield FC Community Trust and Outwood Academy Newbold to give students with a passion for football, sport and education the opportunity learn and play football at the same time.

Students will develop the necessary skills, qualities and characteristics that are required to work within a professional football club or national governing body and gain transferable skills relevant across the sports industry and beyond.

Delivered in partnership with Outwood Academy Newbold, students will study full-time within the sixth form, where a top-class education programme will be assured, with the school’s motto ‘Students First’ at the heart of everything they do.

Alongside their education, students will represent Chesterfield FC, competing in a league against other professional clubs and training on a daily basis with the Trust’s FA/UEFA-qualified coaches. There will be an opportunity to play against other clubs, including Birmingham City, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Derby County and Sunderland!

Course Content

Students will undertake 14 units of work including coursework and exam assessments over a two-year period. The course is full-time with students required to attend all lessons and complete work on time in order to play in the fixtures and represent Chesterfield FC. Upon completion, the course is equivalent to three A-levels, enabling the students to progress on to university, higher education or a foundation degree with Chesterfield FC Community Trust.

Locations

Education – All studies will be based at Outwood Academy Newbold, using the state-of-the-art classrooms that the school has on site.
Training – Training sessions will take place at Outwood Academy Newbold, using the grass and astroturf pitches available on site.
Fixtures – Home games will be played at Glapwell Stadium, allowing the students to experience playing within a stadium environment.
Gym/Recovery – Students will have free access to the gym and hydrotherapy pool at the HUB at the Proact Stadium seven days a week, as well as access to a physio.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the course, students will be faced with a range of options, supporting them to have a future within the sports industry. Dependant on final grades, students will be able to go into higher education at university where ideal courses may include a degree in Sports Development, Sports Coaching or PE and School Sport.
Should students wish to stay involved in the professional football club environment, Chesterfield FC Community Trust offer a foundation degree, where students can study for a further two years whilst completing a full-time work placement within the football club.
All students will also be offered the opportunity to undertake their Level 1 coaching qualification which will enable them to apply for paid coaching work with Chesterfield FC Community Trust when they finish the course.

Steve Roberts, principal at Outwood Academy Newbold, expressed his delight at the partnership, saying: “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s an opportunity for us to partner with Chesterfield Football Club Community Trust and provide students with an opportunity to do BTEC Level 3 Sports.

“That will actually help students who might want to progress to university and it gives people an opportunity to go out and be involved with football as an industry, behind the scenes roles or maybe progress onto something like sports and exercise science.

“It gives them that opportunity and more importantly it gives them the level of qualification to get on to the next step.

“We sit on top of the hill and we can see the stadium from the school. We are on a journey ourselves at the moment, which we’re delighted with and it is an opportunity to involve ourselves in a partnership which can provide something really valuable for students.”

Trust chief John Croot added: “The Football and Education Programme is something that we have been discussing with Steve and his team for a couple of months now.

“It’s taken us some time to get to this stage but we wanted to make sure that the course we were offering was of top quality, in order to fulfil our duties to the students.

“It will be fantastic to have a squad of players representing the club on a weekly basis as well as studying full-time, which I’m sure will stand them in good stead to go on and have a career in sport if that is what they wish to do.”

To apply, students should download the F&E Application Form, available via www.spireitestrust.org.uk. The form should be completed and returned to

PROACT HOSTS CAMPAIGN FOR SENSIBLE DRINKING LAUNCH

Local pubs are being urged to support a campaign to promote sensible drinking, which was launched at the Proact Stadium.

Yvonne Henchliffe, whose son Christopher passed away after a drink-related incident in Chesterfield town centre last year, came up with the initiative called ‘Stay Cute & Dilute – One Punch Kill’.

Yvonne is encouraging all pubs in Chesterfield to support her campaign by serving soft drinks at half price on November 11.

“We’re asking all pubs in Chesterfield to sign up and on that date, serve half-price soft drinks and make their own mocktail,” said Yvonne.

“I’m determined to make a change. There was nothing out there when Chris first died so I decided to start my own campaign.”

The initiative also has the support of Derbyshire Constabulary and Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins, who said: “A year ago, Christopher Henchliffe was tragically killed by a single punch after a late-night incident in Chesterfield. His mum Yvonne has run a really positive campaign, trying to encourage more people to take soft drinks, which I think is a great idea.”

Representatives from Neurocare, the Royal British Legion and Ability all attended the launch event at the Proact. Also supporting the campaign are The Blue Bell Inn in North Wingfield, The Britannia at Brampton and The Olde House in Newbold.

Sarah Spencer from The Britannia said:  “We do a lot in the pub to make sure people stay within reasonable limits.

“I think our customers would embrace the mocktail and they’ve already started thinking of ideas and names that they can come up with.”

Julie Wood of The Olde House commented: “It’s about trying to discourage people from throwing alcohol down their necks and actually just taking their time to drink sensibly.

“We always have facilities where they can help themselves to water so they don’t have to go to the bar. I don’t want them to have to think they’ve got to go and queue.”

REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY AT THE PROACT

Chesterfield FC’s annual Remembrance Ceremony will take place next week.

The ceremony, held to remember the 17 players and officials from the club who gave their lives in the two World Wars, will take place on Friday November 10, starting at 1.30pm.

As Armistice Day falls on a matchday, the ceremony is being held a day early to allow the first-team squad and management to attend.

The short ceremony will be held by the Memorial Garden, which is at the rear of the Proact Stadium. All are welcome to attend.

CHESTERFIELD TO HOST U17 TOURNAMENT OPENER

Chesterfield has been named by UEFA and The Football Association as one of the host venues for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship final tournament next May.

Burton Albion, Loughborough University, Rotherham United, St George’s Park and Walsall have also been selected to host the annual UEFA tournament.

The competition for Europe’s 16 elite nations will be played at venues across the Midlands and South Yorkshire with St George’s Park at its heart.
Chesterfield will host the opening game and Rotherham United will stage the final, with fixtures taking place from May 4 to May 20.

Tickets will go on sale in January with the final draw taking place at St George’s Park in April.
Wayne Rooney, Eden Hazard, Paul Pogba and Mario Götze are some of the famous names to have appeared at this level in the past with the competition acting as the perfect platform for young players to showcase their talents.
England who won the European Under-17 title in 2010 and 2014 and also finished runners- up to Spain in 2017, qualified automatically for the tournament as hosts.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said: “The European Under-17 Championship gives football fans an early opportunity to watch talented young footballers as they start out on what they hope will be successful careers in the game.
“The competition also provides the youngsters with an ideal chance to perform on an international football stage.
“I am very happy that the finals are being staged in England. The Football Association are experienced hosts of major football events and we are all looking forward to an exciting and entertaining tournament.”
England U17s head coach Steve Cooper added: “We are very proud to be hosting the men’s European Under-17 finals next summer.
“St George’s Park will be at the heart of training and matches and all six venues will give the players an opportunity to perform at different stadiums.
“The tournament gives the towns and regions an opportunity to see the best young talent from across the continent and we are very much looking forward to the challenge.”
Chesterfield chief executive Michael Dunford commented: “We are very proud of the facilities we offer and our pride is endorsed by the fact that our stadium has once again been selected to host an international fixture.
“It is an honour for the club to be invited to host the opening fixture and I am sure that the Chesterfield public will turn out in numbers to support the Young Lions.”

The England U17s, who beat their Spanish counterparts 5-2 at the weekend to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup, are in Chesterfield next week. They face Portugal on Wednesday, November 8, kick-off 7pm.
Tickets for that match are priced at £3 for adults and £1.50 for concessions. Charter Standard grassroots clubs can claim a maximum of 25 free tickets while group bookings can be made for a minimum of 15 people at a cost of just 50p a ticket.
